The Dallas Cowboys notched a huge victory over the Washington Commanders in Week 7 and are now sitting at 3-3-1, which puts them in second place in the NFC East and in striking distance of a wild card spot.
Depending on what happens over the next two weeks before the trade deadline, it’s very conceivable that the Cowboys could be a buyer.
A trade rumor from ESPN’s Adam Schefter reinforces the notion that the Cowboys could make a move or multiple moves, and those would likely come on the defensive side of the ball, he says.
“I would say that the Dallas Cowboys are having conversations about moves that they can make before the trade deadline to try to improve that defense, just like Jerry Jones said they could and would once they traded Micah Parsons,” Schefter said. “I’m not telling you that they’ll be able to pull anything off, but I will not be surprised if we hear Dallas, at the very least, inquiring about the availability of various defensive players and ultimately trading for one before the Tuesday, Nov. 4th trade deadline.”
It’s certainly not a secret that the Cowboys need to improve their defense, which ranks 32nd against the pass, 30th against the run and 30th in points allowed per game. The Cowboys also have just 15 sacks through seven games.
In what is no surprise to anyone, the pass-rush has not recovered from the Parsons trade. At cornerback, Kaiir Elam has been a major disappointment on the boundary and Kenny Clark (44.9 run defense grade, per Pro Football Focus) has not provided the kind of boost to the run defense Dallas was hoping he would.
Knowing all that, cornerback, edge rusher and interior defensive line should all be in focus for the Cowboys when it comes to positions they should add to.
How big or how small the Cowboys go remains to be seen, but Dallas certainly has the draft capital to get just about anything done, so nothing is off the table.
