West Virginia returns home this afternoon looking to build off Thursday’s comeback win at Cincinnati, hosting a No. 13 Texas Tech team that arrives in Morgantown trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season.
The Mountaineers enter at 15–8 overall and 6–4 in Big 12 play, still firmly in the middle of the Big 12 Conference race after snapping a two-game skid with a 59–54 win over the Bearcats. Texas Tech comes in at 16–6 and 6–3, having dropped back-to-back games at UCF and against Kansas, the latter coming without point guard Christian Anderson, who was sidelined minutes before tip.
When Anderson is available, the Red Raiders play fast, space the floor, and hunt threes. They rank among the league’s most efficient offensive teams and have multiple players capable of scoring. When Anderson was out against Kansas, that rhythm disappeared. Tech shot under 32 percent from the field and struggled to generate clean looks.
That creates an interesting matchup against a West Virginia defense that has been one of the conference’s most consistent. The Mountaineers are allowing just 63 points per game and have held opponents to 41 percent shooting. The tradeoff has been perimeter defense, where WVU has been willing to live with contested threes in order to protect the paint.
Texas Tech will take advantage of that if they get comfortable from deep, especially with JT Toppin controlling the glass and creating second chances.
Offensively, West Virginia continues to grind. The Mountaineers have averaged just 56 points per game over their last four games, relying on defense and late execution to stay afloat. Honor Huff remains the focal point of the offense, leading the team at 15.8 points per game and ranking near the top of the conference in made threes. His second-half surge at Cincinnati — all 16 points after the break — was a reminder of how quickly he can flip a game when he finds rhythm.

West Virginia leads the all-time series 18–11, though Texas Tech has had the upper hand recently, winning five of the last seven meetings. The most recent matchup came last season in Lubbock, where the Red Raiders pulled away for a 73–51 win.
This feels like one of those games West Virginia wins because they make it miserable. The Mountaineers don’t need to score 75 to win this — they need to defend, rebound, and let the pressure build. If Honor Huff hits a couple early and the Mountaineers avoid giving up run-out points, they can control the flow just enough to stay ahead down the stretch.
West Virginia 67, Texas Tech 64
