Jim’s, the beloved San Antonio diner, will be slinging chicken fried steaks and tortilla soup all night long at yet another one of its locations.

Jim’s #3, located at Fredericksburg Road and Hillcrest Drive near Balcones Heights, started 24-hour service on Wednesday, according to posts on social media.

It’s the second outpost to announce a return to 24/7 service in recent months. In December, Jim’s #1, at Broadway Street and Interstate 410, brought back overnight service.

Before the pandemic, several locations operated 24/7. Today, most restaurants are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. or 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The announcement comes after several Jim’s shuttered around San Antonio. In August, Jim’s closed its Bandera Road location after 27 years. In 2024, Jim’s closed a 54-year-old location at the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand Avenues. Before that, it abruptly shuttered its location on Broadway Street near the San Antonio Zoo.

The history of Jim’s Restaurants goes back to 1947, when the late Jim Hasslocher opened a small bicycle rental shop and started selling watermelon at the front gate of Brackenridge Park. When he began selling charcoal-broiled hamburgers, the spot evolved into the first Frontier Drive-In, which became popular for its burgers, onion rings, milkshakes and carhops.

Owned by Hasslocher’s Frontier Enterprises, Jim’s Restaurants also has three locations in Austin. The company also owns The Magic Time Machine restaurants in San Antonio and Dallas, La Fonda Alamo Heights and Frontier Burger.

Patrons rejoiced in the Facebook comments section after Jim’s announced that the North Side location would be open overnight. People listed their favorite items: biscuits, cheese soup and tortilla soup. One user tagged her friend and suggested they meet up at 3 a.m. for a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of coffee.
