COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 1/2 Red Raiders secured their first ranked win of the season taking down No. 11 Texas A&M 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in front of a record crowd at Davis Diamond. Tech followed that up with a 13-1 win over Providence to cap off the day.
Game One:
Tech (5-0) came out of the gates hot against the Aggies (3-1). Mihyia Davis smoked her first home run of the season to right-center field to open the game, and Mia Williams followed her with a solo shot left field to give the Red Raiders an early 2-0 lead.
A&M responded well though, hitting a two-run homer but would be shut down by NiJaree Canady the rest of the game. Canady improved to 2-0 after throwing 7.0 innings and striking out five batters on just 77 pitches.
Tech’s offense was held in check after a blazing start and wouldn’t score again until the fifth inning. Davis reached base thanks to an error at first base and Williams drove her home with a double. Williams is having as good a start as anyone in the country, hitting .714 with 10 hits, 11 runs, 11 RBI and 24 total bases.
Canady, with Tech up 3-2, allowed just one hit in the final three innings and ended the game with an exclamation point as she struck out the final batter.
Game Two:
The Red Raiders had no time to celebrate their big win as they had to turn around quickly and play Providence (1-2). Tech had no hangover though, putting up five runs and batting through the order in the first half inning.
Kaitlyn Terry got the start and improved to 2-0 after an unreal performance in the circle. She allowed a hit by the first batter she faced but proceeded to strike out the next seven batters. Terry would go 3.0 innings, posting nine strikeouts on 10 at bats and throwing just 46 pitches.
Chloe Riassetto finished the final two innings, allowing just one earned run and picking up a strike out in her first action of the season.
Taylor Pannell finished the game going 3-for-4 with six RBI, including a three-run homer, after going 0-for-3 against A&M despite finding the barrel on her swing. Jackie Lis added two RBI on a single and was close to leaving the yard on multiple occasions, but the wind was not favorable to balls going to right field.
Canady and Terry both notched two RBI a piece as Desirae Spearman drove in a run as well and was a member of the warning track club as her big swing early in the game wasn’t able to find its way over the fence.
UP NEXT: Tech will end its opening weekend road stretch with a game against Bryant tomorrow at noon.
