AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police are investigating a reported case of animal cruelty after videos circulated on social media showing a dog being abused at a downtown apartment complex.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to an Animal Urgent call around 3:56 p.m. Sunday, February 8, at the SEVEN Apartments, located at 615 West 7th Street. Police said they received multiple reports from residents and members of the public about videos that appeared to show a dog being physically abused on an apartment balcony.

A complainant provided officers with a video recorded from a nearby unit that allegedly shows a man restraining a dog against a balcony railing and striking the animal. The APD Animal Cruelty Unit reviewed the footage and determined the behavior was consistent with unjustified pain and suffering.

CBS Austin is choosing not to share the video or photos due to the graphic nature of the content.

Detectives coordinated with patrol officers and Austin Animal Protection due to concerns for the dog’s safety. Later that evening, officers located the suspect returning to the apartment complex with the dog. Police seized the animal without incident and transported it to the Austin Animal Center for evaluation and safekeeping.

Detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
