District 3 Council Member Michael Crain confirmed Bivens’ death in a statement. She served on the city council from 2013 until 2025.
FORT WORTH, Texas — Former Fort Worth City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem Gyna Bivens has died, District 3 Council Member Michael Crain confirmed in a statement Monday.
No cause of death has been announced, but in a statement released herself on Oct. 30, 2025, Bivens revealed that she was undergoing treatment at the Clements University Hospital at UT Southwestern Dallas for a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
Bivens represented District 5 on the Fort Worth City Council from 2013 until 2025.
“Gyna was a tenacious advocate for Southeast Fort Worth and a relentless voice for neighborhoods that too often felt unheard, whether she was working on economic development, public transportation, public safety or quality-of-life issues for the families she represented,” Crain wrote. “Her years of leadership on the Fort Worth City Council and in regional and national organizations reflected not only her deep knowledge of policy, but also her unwavering belief that government should open doors of opportunity for every resident.”
Crain described Bivens as someone who always met disagreement on complex community issues with grace, preparation and commitment to doing what she believed was right for the city.
“She had a remarkable ability to keep us focused on the work at hand, to cut through distractions, and to insist — firmly but respectfully — that we conduct the people’s business with seriousness and integrity,” Crain wrote.
Prior to her time serving the council, Bivens worked in media as a television reporter, as well as a bureau chief, and also as a spokesperson for Oncor and the City of San Antonio.Â
Bivens also chaired the Fort Worth Transportation Authority’s board of directors, as well as the boards of the Fort Worth Commercial Board of Adjustment, the Regional Transportation Council and the Women’s Policy Forum.
