EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Locomotive is gearing up for a pivotal match this Saturday as they close out their regular season with a chance to secure a home playoff game.
This marks their return to the playoffs for the first time since 2023. The Locos can clinch a home playoff match with either a win or a draw against San Antonio this weekend.
Additionally, they could secure the fourth seed if Phoenix loses or draws.
Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera emphasized the team’s focus on their own performance. “We need to continue playing every match like it’s a playoff match,” Cabrera said. “That’s our mentality and we are preparing for that today.”
The Locos have the opportunity to climb as high as the fourth seed, which would allow them to host a playoff match.
However, if Phoenix surpasses them in the standings, El Paso would drop to fifth. The opening round opponent remains uncertain, with Phoenix, Colorado Springs, San Antonio, Orange County, and Lexington all vying for playoff spots. When the dust settles, one of these teams will miss out on the postseason.
