A Fort Worth man is dead after he opened fire on partygoers early Monday morning, only to be fatally shot by one of his victims, police reported.

The violent confrontation at an apartment complex left one shooter dead and another man hospitalized.

Fort Worth police responded to gunfire around 3 a.m. at an apartment building in the 500 block of Cabral Circle. Officers found two men with gunshot wounds.

Investigators said an armed man arrived at the apartment party and began causing a disturbance. The suspect, who was known to at least one person at the gathering, then fired into the crowd.

The gunfire struck one partygoer. The wounded man returned fire at the suspect, killing him, according to police.

The original shooter died at the scene. The man he shot was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Detectives interviewed witnesses throughout Monday morning. Police said they believe this was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community.

A nearby resident, who asked not to be identified, described the scene to The Dallas Express: “There was an unusually loud car skidding away behind the townhomes just before 3 a.m. that woke me up. Not long after, I heard gunshots and yelling. Then the street filled up with police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and a helicopter overhead. This part of downtown is usually pretty quiet, so it was alarming.”

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the deceased suspect’s identity. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Police have not disclosed what relationship existed between the shooter and the partygoers. They also haven’t revealed what sparked the initial disturbance that led to gunfire.
