SAN ANTONIO — For the first time in his NBA career, Luke Kornet has a long term contract and what seems like a permanent home playing in San Antonio.

“First time I’ve been in this position in quite a while,” said Kornet. “I felt like it was a great position to be in.”

The new Spurs big man has been with the Celtics the past three seasons and was a part of their title run in 2024. He was a valuable player on that team and hopes to find a similar role with the Spurs.

“In playing long enough, it’s just about the team and how well we succeed,” said Kornet. “I was excited about the opportunity to help everyone bridge into the next step of things.”

Kornet sees the young talent in San Antonio and the potential for this franchise to maybe have a similar run to what he was a part of in Boston. He’ll bring some needed size to help when Victor Wembanyama is not on the court and could even find some time sharing the floor with Wemby.

“It’ll be fun trying to figure out the best way to utilize that and implement it,” said Kornet. “Obviously, Victor’s got some incredible gifts.”

A lot of factors played into Kornet signing with the Spurs this offseason, one of them being a return to Texas. Kornet spent time in the Dallas-Fort Worth area growing up and played high school basketball at Argyle Liberty Christian. Now, he’s in San Antonio raising his young kids.

“It’s kind of interesting being on the other side of life, growing up here to now being a parent,” said Kornet. “Especially in San Antonio the amount of young families and stuff has been awesome.”

Now that he’s settled and set to be a Spur for the next few years, we’ll see what Kornet can add to this young, talented roster.
