SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department said a 15-year-old girl was killed after being struck by a garbage truck at an apartment complex on the Northwest Side.
Officers responded to the crash just after 6:10 a.m. Monday in the 6000 block of Danny Kaye Drive between Shadow Glen and Oakdell Way.
Upon arrival, SAPD said that EMS officials found the teen dead in the apartment’s parking lot.
The officers were told that the driver of the garbage truck was traveling southbound after a trash pickup on a private road, police said.
The driver was on his normal pickup route when the girl jumped in front of the garbage truck and then behind it, according to SAPD.
After the teen jumped behind the garbage truck, the department said that’s when she was hit.
An officer at the scene told KSAT that the driver fled the scene after hitting the girl. However, police did not mention this detail in a preliminary report.
Officers are in discussions with the teen’s family to obtain more information, SAPD said.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the girl’s identity, as well as her cause and manner of death.
The crash remains under investigation.
