SAN ANTONIO — Texas A&M University-San Antonio (TAMUSA) is starting up a men’s and women’s track and cross-country teams for the 2026-27 school year, according to a news release.
The university, which started up its athletic programs in 2020, is also adding a new $10 million softball complex in Bexar County, which “will serve as a first-class resource for both the University and the local community.”
“We are making decisions that best position the institution for success and growth,” University President Salvador Hector Ochoa said. “The expansion of intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the University’s strategic plan, as we continue our journey to becoming a destination campus and the school of first choice for an increasing number of students across Bexar County and all of Texas.”
The TAMUSA Jaguars are looking to expand their reach across state athletics in the near future, with them expecting to have 200 athletes when recruiting is finished for the new teams.
“This is an incredibly exciting moment for Jaguar Athletics and for the University. Adding these sports will not only open new opportunities for student-athlete participation but also contribute to a more vibrant campus culture and enhance the student experience and school spirit,” said Dr. Darnell Smith, the university’s athletic director.
Texas A&M University-San Antonio currently has a little over 7,500 students, and they compete in the Red River Athletic Conference, which includes schools in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico.
