AUSTIN, Texas — 39 Texas House Democrats are asking for more clarity on the Texas Education Agency’s guidance on student-led walkouts. This comes after Governor Greg Abbott directed the agency to investigate student protests, calling them disruptive. In a letter to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, lawmakers asked nine specific questions, including the specific terms of Governor Abbott’s directive and what would trigger a state takeover. The Governor’s office has not published any formal written guidance or directives beyond what has been posted on social media.
This comes after Austin ISD implemented new walkout and protest protocols after Governor Abbott directed TEA to investigate the district’s involvement in these events. The new guidelines show administrators and AISD police will monitor these events within 300 feet of campus. Once the walkout leaves the area, Austin police will assist AISD police in keeping students safe. Staff are also not allowed to participate, plan or endorse these activities unless directed to do so for safety or monitoring purposes.
