Texas A&M (17-6, 7-3 SEC) endured its second losing streak of the season after falling to Alabama on the road, followed by Saturday’s blowout 86-67 home loss to No. 17 Florida, as the Gators continue to look like one of the best teams in the country, and looked like it in both halves. However, Texas A&M struggled to shoot in the first half and lost the rebounding battle 50-43.

It’s hard to gauge if Saturday’s loss will affect the Aggies moving forward, but based on their entire season thus far, first-year head coach Bucky McMillan’s veteran squad has not lost more than two games in a row all season, going back to early non-conference losses to Oklahoma State and UCF before this week’s disappointing showing.

On Wednesday night, the Aggies will host Missouri in a must-win game, one of four home games remaining in the regular season. On paper, Texas A&M likely needs just three more wins in conference play to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and while the Aggies will face Vanderbilt on the road this Saturday, it’s all about stacking wins no matter when or where.

Texas A&M’s offense was horrific in the first half vs. Florida, shooting 17% from the field, and while the second half performance wasn’t nearly as bad, it’s clear that this showing won’t be repeated, given the level of shooting talent, while senior forward Rashaun Agee will continue leading the offense in the locker room and on the court.

On Tuesday, Bucky McMillan sat down during his weekly appearance on the Aggie Basketball Hour. Here’s what he had to say before hosting Missouri on Wednesday night.

That was loud, energetic, and we really wanted to deliver for our crowd. That was an incredible atmosphere. When you can build on that, Reed Arena is the place to be on game nights. The 12th Man did their job.”

Texas A&M’s goals remain the same after two straight losses

“We’re trying to win the SEC. To do that you have to play great basketball. We had a bad game vs Florida and we didn’t shoot it well. How do you respond when you had a bad night? We’ve got to continue to pursue a championship in the SEC.”

Rashaun Agee truly shines as the team’s 12 Man representative

“There’s nobody better than Rashaun Agee to wear No. 12. Agee the Aggie. It’s perfect. He’s a soldier, he represents us well. It’s not about him, it’s about winning. I will remember him as long as i’m alive, i’m very fortunate to coach him.”

McMillan on Texas A&M coaches supporting one another

“They support you through the highs and the lows. What a great win for Joni and our women’s team the other day over No. 21 Alabama. Coach Elko has always been so supportive, all our coaches are great.”

McMillan on wanting to make Reed Arena one of the best college basketball environments

“The fact that we have an atmosphere like that at Reed Arena means we’re doing great things together. I want ESPN to pan across the crowd with a packed student section and say the

Reed Rowdies are the best fanbase in the country every game.”

McMillan on the limited practice schedule to keep his team fresh late in the season

“I want my players to get to the SEC and NCAA Tournament and they don’t want it to end. There are always teams where you’re just beating a dead horse late in the year, so we’ve got to keep our guys fresh physically and mentally for March.”

College basketball is impossible to predict

“We start the game at Georgia and scored 22 points in the first five minutes. We scored 97 at Alabama. The other night we had 24 points with 15 minutes left in the game against Florida. It’s funny how basketball works.”

The Aggies have proven their ability to win tough games on the road

“We’re at the top of Quad 1A wins in the league. We’ve proven we can win tough games on the road and just win big games period. You have to do that to have success in this league.”

McMillan on the short turnover from Wednesday to Saturday

“We pulled it off against South Carolina, but before that, SEC teams were 1-8 in that spot. It’s hard, they’ve shown the data on it. Missouri and Vanderbilt are good teams.”

McMillan on the SEC being the “No. 1 league in basketball”

“It’s the No. 1 league in basketball with more teams inside the top 40 than any other league. Anybody on any given night can beat anybody, not all leagues are like that. It Just Means More. That’s where you want to be.”
