The closure is the latest in a series of setbacks for the mall as it moves toward redevelopment

The Crayola Experience at The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano was unexpectedly closed this week after a lockout notice appeared on the doors.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the landlord, Centennial, changed the locks on Feb. 7 due to delinquent rent. The notice states that access could be restored if the full overdue balance is paid. Crayola’s website also lists the Plano location as “temporarily closed.”

Families Left Without Answers

The sudden closure sparked confusion and frustration among customers, particularly families who had events scheduled at the venue. On Crayola’s Facebook page, one parent shared that her child’s birthday party was scheduled for Feb. 8, but the family arrived to find the venue closed, saying there had been no advance notice by phone or email before guests showed up.

Other commenters raised concerns about annual passes that had already been purchased, asking how refunds or credits would be handled if the closure extends.

As of now, Crayola has not released additional details about the lockout or how affected customers will be accommodated.

Another Setback For Willow Bend

The closure adds to a growing list of challenges facing Willow Bend. Several major anchors have exited or announced plans to leave the mall. Dillard’s has already closed, Macy’s announced its departure in 2024, and Neiman Marcus is set to follow.

Those departures come as redevelopment plans for the 107-acre property continue to evolve. Earlier concepts for The Bend redevelopment envisioned keeping core anchors in place, but newer iterations emphasize walkability, nearly 1,000 apartments and flexibility for future large-scale uses.

Dallas Stars Speculation Looms

The uncertainty surrounding Willow Bend has intensified amid reports that the Dallas Stars are exploring the site as a potential future home. Local Profile previously reported that the team is seeking at least 75 acres for a new arena and surrounding mixed-use development once its lease at the American Airlines Center expires in 2031.

Plano’s Willow Bend property has reportedly emerged as a frontrunner, with Frisco, The Colony, Arlington and Fort Worth also under consideration. If the Stars choose Plano, a decision could come within six to eight months, potentially allowing construction to begin by 2028 or 2029 ahead of the 2031–32 NHL season.

A Pivotal Moment For Plano And Willow Bend

Whether the Stars ultimately land in Plano or not, the combination of anchor tenant exits and the sudden closure of attractions like the Crayola Experience underscores the transitional moment Willow Bend is facing. The site’s future redevelopment could mark a turning point not only for the struggling mall, but for the city’s long-term vision along the Park Boulevard corridor.
