Arlington schools have been asked to refrain from outdoor activities after a natural gas company experienced a “major” gas leak Tuesday morning, district officials said in a statement to parents.

District officials attributed the leak to Atmos Energy, though an Atmos spokesperson confirmed to The Dallas Morning News that the leak is related to Energy Transfer.

“Arlington Fire is aware of this situation, and we are sharing this information with you as a precautionary measure,” the statement said.

Officials said the smell of gas is noticeable across multiple locations throughout the city. Campuses have been asked to remain inside until an all-clear is given, according to the statement.

“Arlington ISD Facility Services is making adjustments to our air intake systems to minimize the smell from encroaching into our buildings,” the statement said.

The Dallas Morning News contacted Energy Transfer for more details but did not immediately heard back.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
