Need help filing your tax returns? NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 are partnering with Texas Weslyan to offer assistance to taxpayers this season through a special initiative that benefits both the taxpayer and the students in this program. Tax Day is Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Texas Wesleyan’s partnership with the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program goes back to 2018. The VITA program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is locally administered by the United Way of Tarrant County. The program offers free assistance to qualifying Tarrant County residents that earn $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, and those with limited English proficiency.
Students at Texas Wesleyan, most of whom are accounting and business majors, are enrolled in a service-learning course where they participate in VITA. This year, 22 students are enrolled in the program. Here, they get hands-on learning experience by applying basic tax laws and working with clients, building social, communication, and technical skills. Students enrolled in the course, or those who serve as volunteers, complete training and serve as certified volunteer tax preparers at Tarrant County VITA sites.
Tarrant County VITA sites are open to the public and will operate through Wednesday, April 15.

About VITA
During the Tax Season (February – April), the VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $69,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified VITA volunteers provide basic income tax return services without charge, ensuring 100 percent of the tax refund goes directly to the customer.
