LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas has begun moving inmates into the Dalby Unit outside Post as the state prepares to house nearly 2,000 people with a focus on addiction recovery.
The state purchased the unit for $110 million last year. Inmates started moving in last month, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice anticipates having about 1,900 inmates there by next month.
The Garza County unit is fully air conditioned and will give inmates the opportunity to serve their sentences with education courses, substance use treatment and life skills programs.
The facility includes new “Intro to Construction” and “RV Service Technician” programs to give inmates workforce skills after they serve their sentence.
The “Recovery Housing Opportunity Program” is aimed at breaking addiction and promoting healthier living, including special dorms aimed at maintaining sobriety.
TDCJ will hold a grand opening ceremony in two weeks.
