Deep Ellum is in constant flux, but some parts of it never change — like the Reverend Horton Heat.
Led by singer-guitarist Jim “Reverend Horton” Heath, the psychobilly trio was one of the first acts to rise from the neighborhood during its revival in the ‘80s. It’s stayed true to its rough-and-tumble roots ever since.
To mark its 40th year, the band has released a new song and video, “Rock and Roll is Now,” a classic Reverend rave-up that owes a debt or two to the Trashmen’s 1963 classic “Surfin’ Bird” and the Rivingtons’ ’62 R&B hit “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow.”
The group’s concert at Trees also serves as an album-release show for the opening act, the Texas Zephyrs, a retro-leaning Fort Worth rock and country band.
