Austin lovers may need an umbrella this Valentine’s Day as scattered showers and mild temperatures move in. Plan for a damp but cozy evening across Central Texas.
AUSTIN, Texas — Love is in the air this week, but in Central Texas, that love might come with a side of precipitation. If you were planning a sweeping, cinematic picnic at Zilker Park or a rooftop toast under the stars, Mother Nature might be asking for a rain check.
As we head into Valentine’s Day, the KVUE Weather team is tracking a shift in the atmosphere that could put a literal damper on your outdoor activities.

The latest 7-day forecast indicates a transition from the clear skies we have enjoyed recently to a more unsettled pattern.
By Saturday, we are looking at a 60% chance of rain and scattered thunderstorms. While a 60% chance sounds like a heartbreak, it really means that more than half of our viewing area is likely to see measurable rain at some point during the day.
It is not necessarily a total washout for your evening plans, but you should definitely have a Plan B that involves a sturdy roof and perhaps some cozy indoor lighting.

Temperatures will remain relatively warm, hovering in the mid-70s during the day and dipping into the 50s as the sun sets. It’s the kind of weather where a light jacket or a stylish trench coat serves as both a fashion statement and a survival tool.
For those heading out for a Valentine’s date night, the wet roads will be the biggest mood-killer. Commuters should allow extra time to reach their dinner reservations, as Austin traffic and rain go together like oil and water.

The Weather Prediction Center’s 7-day rainfall outlook suggests that while we aren’t expecting a flood of biblical proportions, the consistent moisture will keep things soggy through the weekend.
If you are determined to stay outdoors, look for the breaks in the clouds during the afternoon hours, but keep the KVUE app handy to track storms in real time.
Whether you are spending the day with a significant other, friends or a very spoiled pet, stay dry and stay safe.
