SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — According to the San Antonio Police Officers Association, 20 officers have been shot over the last three years.
That number has leader Danny Diaz increasingly concerned about the safety of officers and the people of San Antonio. Among his biggest issues in the number of police patrolling city streets.
KENS 5 reports SAPD had 1,920 officers in 1991, and today that number is 2,558. Diaz thinks that number is too low to maintain the dynamic of preventing crime through visibility.
Due to the number of officers now on the force, high-risk warrants are no loner being served, and Diaz thinks this contributes to the idea of retreat and de-escalate when officers sometimes need to get control of a situation.
The association and the city will engage in contract talks next year, but Diaz hopes an agreement falls in place well before then.
