AUSTIN, Texas — A 38-year-old man has been charged with murder after a 66-year-old man died days following an assault in late January, Austin police said.
Raymond Ware was arrested Jan. 31 after police responded to a welfare check at 1054 Springdale Road at 6:46 p.m. Officers found Robert Garcia lying on the ground, bleeding and unconscious with significant head trauma, according to police.

Garcia was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries on Feb. 4.
Police said Ware allegedly confronted Garcia at his residence and violently assaulted him. When officers arrived, Ware had barricaded himself inside a nearby apartment and refused to exit.
APD’s Aggravated Assault Detectives, crime scene specialists and SWAT units responded to the scene. The SWAT team successfully arrested Ware.
While in custody at the APD main station, Ware attempted to escape, according to police.
Ware was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Following Garcia’s death, an arrest warrant for murder was obtained on Feb. 10.
