AUSTIN, Texas — A man has been charged with murder after a victim died following an assault on Saturday, Jan. 31, according to the Austin Police Department (APD).

Officers responded around 7 p.m. to reports of a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Springdale Road. Multiple 911 callers reported that an elderly man had been attacked, and a SWAT situation developed at the scene, police said.

Responding officers found a man with what police described as “penetrating wounds.” He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said on Wednesday, Feb. 4, the victim, later identified as Robert Garcia, died from his injuries.

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for murder on Feb. 10 for Raymond Ware, who was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Ware is now charged with murder.

During the initial response, police said Ware barricaded himself inside an apartment before being arrested by the SWAT team. While in custody at APD headquarters, he allegedly tried to escape.
