Senate members share a laugh during a Student Senate general body meeting Feb. 10 in the Student Government Chambers. The Senate introduced Resolution 26-02, “Catch Success Before it Fails,” which gives academic support to students whose GPA falls below 2.25.
The Student Senate introduced two resolutions and killed another during its Tuesday meeting.
The Senate introduced Resolution 26-02, “Catch Success Before it Fails,” which aims to establish mandatory academic support sessions for students whose GPA falls below 2.25.
Speaker of the Senate Austin Palacios speaks during a Student Senate general body meeting Feb. 10 in the Student Government Chambers. The Senate introduced two resolutions.
A registration hold would be placed on accounts of students who haven’t finished their academic support sessions, ensuring accountability and alignment with the university’s mission of student achievement, according to the resolution.
Drew Miller, senior associate vice president for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, who served as temporary acting adviser during the meeting, said the university does have the power to make certain things mandatory; however, if it were to affect the whole student body, it would have to be incorporated in the student handbook, which would require approval by the Board of Regents.
“[It’s] possible but also can take some time,” Miller said.
The Senate also introduced Resolution 26-03, “Lock, Charge, & Go,” which asks the university to add charging lockers to provide a safe space for students to set aside devices while they charge. The resolution states that students currently rely on unsecured charging stations and exposed cords.
The addition of the lockers is targeted for the University Center, which faces future renovations, and high-traffic spaces such as The Commons.
Resolution 25-26, “The Glitter Haus Act,” which aimed to allow nonbinary students to room with their preferred gender, has been killed in committee, following a conversation with the Office of Legal Affairs, due to legal issues in Texas.
Student Senate members gather during a general body meeting Feb. 10 in the Student Government Chambers. The senators look to implement protected charging stations with Resolution 26-03, “Lock, Charge, & Go.”
The Senate also gave updates on these resolutions:
Resolution 25-29, “Midterm Exam, Midterm Review,” calls for the implementation of a professor review during midterms.
Resolution 25-28, “Operation Relocation: Bring the Vets to the UC,” calls for the relocation of the Veteran Center to the University Center after renovation.
Resolution 25-30, “Seeds of Support,” calls for the organization of a campus community garden, the proceeds of which would be donated to the food pantry.
Resolution 25-25, “From Vacancy to Victory,” calls for the implementation of temporary emergency housing and assistance on campus for homeless students.
Resolution 26-01, “Every Car Counts,” calls for students to be able to register multiple vehicles under the same parking permit.
The Student Senate will meet next at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Student Government Chambers in the University Center.
