CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — For those who travel along Everhart Road, the changes are hard to miss. But for drivers and nearby businesses, the biggest relief is the end of construction.

A major road improvement project along Everhart has been completed, bringing new drainage and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades — and, business owners say, fewer headaches.

Amber Addkison, owner of La Vita Bella, said the construction made it difficult for both employees and customers to reach her business.

“We had put up cones with our business name on them. Well every other day my business name would be turned the other way to take a left or take a right. Or it would be a couple businesses down so it was harder for my customers to actually get here,” she said.

While work on Everhart is now finished, the city is already planning its next major road project.

Officials recently announced a full reconstruction of Alameda Street. The $15 million project will include drainage and ADA improvements similar to those completed along Everhart.

Panacea owner Rene Pena said the construction caused some frustration, but he understands the need for long-term investment.

“We’re grateful that the city put that investment in this road and grateful that my customers won’t be complaining about getting in and out of here,” she said.

For Addkison, the biggest benefit of the completed project is a simpler commute.

“And during traffic time it was even harder if I was making a left instead of taking a right. So most of the time I would take a right and would have to go all the way around.”
