SAN ANTONIO – Some local officials are fighting back against the federal government’s plan to develop a massive new immigration detention facility.

Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert is calling for legal action to scrutinize the process behind a major facility purchase, raising questions about whether key steps were completed before the deal moved forward.

Calvert said the city and county should file a legal injunction to investigate whether certain procedures were followed. He wants a court to determine whether an environmental impact statement was completed and whether an appraisal was conducted.

He also voiced concern about the potential size of the operation and the number of people who could be held there.

“Up to ten-thousand people we believe may be housed there, and I don’t think the city of San Antonio should turn on the water and the power until they have concessions based upon health and safety,” Calvert said.

Calvert said he is working with U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, who is investigating whether federal funds were used properly.
