SAN ANTONIO – Judson Independent School District Board Trustees voted Monday to close four schools in the 2026-2027 school year as they face a budget shortfall of more $37 million.

Judson ISD Board President Monica Ryan says the school district is also experiencing a decrease in enrollment which forced the trustees to make some tough decisions.

“When you have less students, you get less funding,” Ryan said. “Which means we’re going to have to look at reducing the amount of facilities and personnel that exist.”

Judson ISD Trustees voted to close one middle school and three elementary schools in order to balance the budget shortfall.

Ryan says it was a difficult decision, “There’s a lot of emotions and history tied t these schools.”

Ryan says closing three elementary schools will save the district millions of dollars.

“Some of our analysis from our consultant is that an elementary school is about $1.5 million,” Ryan said.

The vote to consider the closures was not a unanimous decision. District 4 Trustee Jose Macias says closing the schools could have a negative impact on the community.

“I think it’s aggressive and more than we need to do if we’re really going to offer support to communities across Judson ISD.

Judson ISD board members will meet Saturday to discuss potential school closures, with a final vote scheduled for Monday.
