SAN ANTONIO – A medical episode is the likely cause of a chain-reaction crash involving several vehicles, including a VIA bus and a San Antonio Police patrol car.

The accident happened just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Wurzbach Road and Ewing Hassell Drive on the Northwest Side.

Police said the sedan approached the intersection and crashed into a pickup truck before jumping a curb and kept going, crashing into a stopped VIA bus. The crash pushed the bus into a delivery truck.

VIA officials said there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.

And that wasn’t all.

The sedan then slammed into the back of a patrol car, causing major damage to both vehicles.

Investigators believe the driver of the sedan may have been experiencing a medical emergency at the time of the crash.

Both officers inside the patrol car were taken to a local hospital to be medically evaluated. The driver of the sedan was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Police say the drivers of the pickup truck, bus, and delivery truck were not injured.
