AUSTIN, Texas — The pedestrian killed in the crash that shut down I-35 early Tuesday morning has been identified.

Police say officers responded at 3:55 a.m. Tuesday to a crash involving a box truck and a pedestrian in the 10400 block of South I-35 in the southbound lanes.

The pedestrian, identified as 45-year-old David Rodriguez, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver of the box truck stayed at the scene, was not impaired, and is cooperating with the investigation.

The freeway was closed for several hours while responders worked the scene. APD says that police did a “wash down” of the road around 8 a.m. before opening the lanes back up.

APD says that the incident is being investigated as Austin’s 10th fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 10 deaths.
