Is Houston done with freezing temperatures?

  • February 12, 2026

After the recent warm-up, it’s a fair question: Are we done worrying about freezing weather?

On average, Houston’s last freeze happens around Feb. 13. That’s based on climate data from NOAA and NCEI from 1991 – 2020.

NOAA and NCEI

Even when the odds are low, Houston has seen cold snaps well after mid-February. Latest freeze on record: April 10, 1973 (31°F).

A hard and long freeze becomes less likely as head into late winter. However, frost is still possible through at least the first week of March, and potentially later for areas north of Houston. If you live north of I-10, the typical end of freeze season is later. Freeze chances stay stay into March for communities north of Houston.

Although the odds drop for Houston for hard freeze in mid-February, mother nature can be tricky. I’ll keep you updated if a late-season freeze returns to the forecast to make sure you have enough time to protect those sensitive plants.
