LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) indoor track & field teams are heading to Texas Tech for a final non-conference tune-up meet at the Jarvis Scott Invite.

The Vaqueros will compete Friday and Saturday at the Sports Performance Center. Action begins at 2 p.m. Friday with field events and at 11 a.m. Saturday with field and track events.

There are teams at all levels competing at the meet, from Power 4s to mid-majors to junior colleges. Some of the big teams represented include Texas Tech, Baylor, Wisconsin, Colorado State, Texas State, UTEP, South Florida, Air Force, and Sam Houston State. The Vaqueros will see two Southland Conference (SLC) opponents in UIW and Northwestern State. Other familiar mid-major opponents include Tarleton State, UT Arlington, Abilene Christian and North Texas. Some top non-DI teams, including Angelo State and New Mexico JC, will also be on-hand.

UTRGV generated significant momentum last weekend at Texas A&M’s Charlie Thomas Invitational. The Vaqueros collected 17 personal bests and five program records while making 23 entries into the program record books. Student-athletes were entered in their preferred events and showed out significantly after one month of hard, intentional training.

Senior Nayla Harris continues to headline the program. She won her third consecutive 60-meter dash last weekend and is the clear leader in the SLC in the event. Harris is holding on to the No. 6 spot in the nation with her best time of 7.18.

Junior N Vanee Ancike is also a conference leader as she paces a dynamic women’s 800-meter run trio all placed in the top 5 in the SLC. Behind Anchike at No. 1 are Lilliana Guerrero and Kailey Salazar. The women’s team also looks strong in the 200-meter dash, led by No. 2 Kaliyah Poston and reigning bronze medalist Jizzale Davis. Efe Latham rose to No. 2 in the SLC in shot put after posting a lifetime best last weekend.

Newcomers Jefferson Jean and Antwoine Warren are among the top producers on the men’s team through two meets. Warren leads the Southland in men’s high jump after breaking the program record last weekend. Jean is second in the Southland in 60 hurdles. The 4×400-meter relay of Alejandro Arellano, Joshua Mascall, Daniel Siaffa and Derrius Henry opened strong to take the No. 2 spot in the conference while sprinters Corin Burns and Richard Young are adding to the track success.

This meet will give the Vaqueros a chance to experience another high-intensity competitive environment and show them what final details need to be worked on ahead of the SLC Indoor Championships set for Feb. 25-26.
