Houston rodeo season is almost here, but scammers are trying to ruin the fun.
HOUSTON — With the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo opening in less than three weeks, officials are cautioning attendees about potential scams as carnival and food packs hit the market ahead of the full schedule release.
Rodeo representatives are urging ticket buyers to purchase only from authorized sources to avoid fraud as deals for carnival passes become available. The physical passes come in three price points: $125, $50, and $20, with committee members selling hard copies throughout the community.
“Encourage people not to purchase from strangers in those types of things,” said Danielle Grossman, HLSR communications director.
The $125 carnival pack offers the best value for families, according to Grossman, representing $500 worth of carnival activities.
“If you can save the money we want you to do so. So, we have our carnival pass, which are a great value. Our 125 pack is a $500 value,” she said.
Officials warn that any discounted pricing should raise immediate red flags for buyers.
“You’re never going to see a discounted carnival pack if you see a carnival pack that is a 125 pack for $120 that is not valid,” Grossman said.
While physical passes are available, rodeo officials recommend purchasing virtual versions online at rodeohouston.com for added security. Buyers should avoid unauthorized websites, social media sellers, and strangers offering passes.
“Common sense when you’re purchasing digital items on the Internet we want to make sure you stay protected and the only way you can do that is making sure, you’re buying one that is real and sold at rodeohouston.com,” Grossman said.
For those purchasing physical carnival packs, officials advise buying only from known rodeo committee members. Buyers should verify the code on the back hasn’t been scratched off and should immediately register the code on the Rodeo app.
The event at NRG Park is expected to welcome thousands of attendees once it opens.
