Alright, Lubbock—let’s be honest for a second. Everyone in this town thinks they’re a fantastic driver…except maybe that one lady in the giant black SUV who comes to a COMPLETE STOP before turning into the Starbuck’s at 82nd & Quaker EVERY SINGLE MORNING!!!! (Sorry. I got a little angry there.)

But according to a national survey, most folks might not be quite as road-ready as they think. Only about 40% of Americans say they’re confident they’d pass a driver’s test if they had to retake it today. That means less than half of us could cruise into the DMV without breaking a sweat. Even worse, 25% flat-out admit they’d probably fail. Ouch.
How Well Do You Really Know Your Dashboard?
The survey didn’t stop with driving tests—it also asked people how well they understand their own cars. Turns out, the average driver only recognizes about 78% of dashboard warning lights. Sure, we all know the check engine and oil lights, but when it comes to things like tire pressure, ABS, or traction control? Less than half of drivers could name them.
Even more surprising—15% of drivers have never opened their owner’s manual. Not once! When a mystery light pops up on the dash, most of us don’t call a mechanic—we grab our phones and type, “weird yellow triangle on dashboard” into Google.

And if your score’s not so great, don’t worry. There’s even a video with a certified driving tutor walking through the test step-by-step. It’s a fun (and slightly humbling) way to make sure you’re not the one holding up traffic on the Loop.
Stay Safe, Hub City
So, Lubbock, before we judge the next person who forgets their blinker or drifts into the turn lane too early, maybe we should all brush up a bit. Grab that owner’s manual, take the quiz, and remember—just because you’ve been driving since high school doesn’t mean you’d still pass the test today.
