AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Signing day marked a milestone moment for Randall cross country as senior Aspen Turman officially signed to continue her academic and athletic career at the collegiate level, taking the next step in her running journey.
Turman will head to Texas A&M-Texarkana this fall. She has made a huge difference during her time as a Lady Raider since her freshman year, racking up many accomplishments including trips to the state championships for cross country every year and placing 11th in her career.
Future Eagle excited for Division II competition
The future Eagle said she chose Texas A&M-Texarkana because she loved the environment and the people. She is also excited as the program moves into Division II, where she will compete against runners she once watched and looked up to.
“I loved the coach, I loved the area, and it was just far enough to be away from home, but if I wanted to drive back anytime I could,” Turman said.
Turman expressed excitement about the program’s transition to Division II competition.
“I would probably say once we transfer to D2, I’m really excited to be able to run against the people that I have looked up to, mentors and everything, and it’s just amazing,” she said.
Coaches praise four-year success
Cross country coach Rebecca James highlighted Turman’s consistent success throughout her high school career.
“Freshman year, she was all district, third place as a team, we got third place at state. Sophomore year, she was all district, all region, all state, and we got first at state that year. And then junior year, we got second at state, she was all district, all region, all state. And then senior year, all district and all state,” she said.
James said Turman earned all-state recognition from the Texas Girls Coaching Association all four years.
“We made the all state, she made the all state Texas Girls Coaching Association all four years. She’s worked hard, done a lot of hard work, a lot of early mornings, and a lot of hard work, fast working out in the afternoons. She’s kept her grades up and everything, and worked hard, and so now she’s going to be running in college. That’s a big accomplishment,” James said.
James also noted Turman’s track success, including reaching regionals in her sophomore year in the 4×400 relay and 2-mile events.
Track and field coach Jenna Jesko praised Turman’s leadership and work ethic.
“To help the other girls and hold them accountable, she said all the hard work she balances, a lot of things. She’s great in the classroom, she has a lot of friends, she works, all the things. So she’s been great for us and we’re excited to see what she does in the future,” Jesko said.
