CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – West Texas A&M basketball teams completed a sweep of UT Dallas on Thursday night at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, with both squads earning Lone Star Conference victories.
Lady Buffs control throughout 68-61 win
The No. 8 Lady Buffs led wire-to-wire in their 68-61 victory over the UT Dallas Comets. WT started strong in the first quarter, establishing an early lead with effective scoring in the paint.
Taylor Haggan contributed early with a layup and jumper, both assisted by Randi Harding, who also added a three-pointer near the end of the quarter. Kenadee Winfrey’s three-pointer helped extend the lead to 8-0, capitalizing on turnovers by UTD.
The Lady Buffs extended their lead in the second quarter with Claire Graham’s three-pointer assisted by Kyla Kane, bringing the score to 22-14. Taytum Bell contributed with a layup and tip-in, and Chloe Callahan’s fast-break layup assisted by Graham helped secure a 31-22 halftime lead.
WT established momentum early in the third quarter with strong defense, highlighted by Haggan’s steal leading to a fast-break layup by Harding. The Lady Buffs extended their lead through efficient scoring in the paint and a crucial three-pointer by Henley West in the closing seconds.
Despite UT Dallas attempting a late comeback in the fourth quarter, the Lady Buffs’ defense held firm. Kane’s steady performance at the free-throw line and a final fast-break layup by Graham sealed the 68-61 win.
Randi Harding scored 14 points and recorded three rebounds. Taylor Haggan posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while also adding three steals. Kyla Kane collected 10 rebounds and contributed eight points.
Men’s team forces 26 turnovers in 75-63 victory
The West Texas A&M men’s basketball team played lockdown defense, forcing 26 turnovers in a 75-63 victory over the UT Dallas Comets.
WT opened the first half by establishing a strong defensive presence, forcing 17 turnovers from the Comets. The defensive effort was complemented by effective scoring in transition, as the Buffs notched nine fastbreak points. Brock Mishak led the scoring with crucial three-pointers, while Fontaine Williams contributed significantly with points in the paint.
The Buffs capitalized on back-to-back three-pointers by TJ Brown and Mishak, extending their lead. The team maintained control despite the visitors’ attempts to close the gap, leading 38-30 at halftime.
Zach Brown opened the second half with a three-pointer, building on the nine-point lead. Williams and James Parlow successfully scored, extending WT’s advantage to 45-32 early in the half.
The Buffs maintained momentum with effective defensive plays, including a block by Parlow and a steal by Williams. Brown added to the scoring with a three-pointer, pushing the lead to 70-58 with just over four minutes remaining.
Mishak led the Buffs with 20 points, including three three-pointers, and recorded four steals. Williams contributed 19 points, making six of six free throws. Brown added 15 points and collected four rebounds.
Road trip ahead
Both teams hit the road for their final regular season road trip next Thursday. The Lady Buffs travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m., while the men’s team faces the Javelinas at 7:30 p.m.
