AUSTIN, Texas — The Round Rock City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance that would allow Skybox to build a new data center. The rezoning request will allow the facility to be built near East Old Settlers Boulevard and North A W Grimes. The Skybox project is Round Rock’s eighth approved A.I. data center.

At last night’s meeting, residents made their voices heard for hours. Many spoke about noise, water use, electricity demand and how close the facility would be to homes. After a final vote was taken, residents could be heard shouting “you should be voted out” and “find a new job” at the city council.

The city’s director of planning says there is no evidence of any disruption or negative impacts to the community or environment from two major data centers already operating within the city. The city adds Skybox will have to follow specific rules and will face consequences if they do not.
