San Antonio City Council tried to block ICE detention center on East Side

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The federal government now has its hands on a vacated warehouse on the East Side that will become a detention center for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

As the project appears to be moving ahead, some San Antonio City Council members spent time Thursday morning discussing ways they might be able to stop the project.

According to News 4 SA, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones cautioned against taking any legal action against the plan because the city might not be in the best position to do it.

With limited options, some councilmembers proposed ideas like barring any privately run detention centers within the city limits, though even that possibility seemed to offer little impact against the ICE facility. It was also proposed that San Antonio, as a city, not do business with entities giving support to ICE

The warehouse off Loop 410 near East Houston Street has 640,000 square feet, and the city’s options are limited because ICE is a federal agency.

Some people who spoke at the meeting voiced concerns about future protests at the new facility.
