Chris McAllister, assistant director of Fort Worth Animal Care & Control, updated members of the Fort Worth Animal Shelter Advisory Committee at their Feb. 4 meeting.
The trailer will serve neighborhoods with the most needs, McAllister told committee members. He said he wants to contact local veterinarians to ask if they would be interested in volunteering.
The program is likely to launch in late spring or early summer, city staff said. The services will be designed to keep pets healthier and reduce overpopulation, the staff has said.
MEETING NOTES
Fort Worth Animal Care & Control is a division of the code compliance department. The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee helps the city evaluate challenges, consider policy direction, as well as ensure that decisions are guided by diverse perspectives.
Meeting called to order at 5:02 p.m.
Annette Stubenbordt, city of Fort Worth senior administrative assistant, swore in the committee members: Rosemary Lindsey, Kristina Valentine, Rachel Cope, Amber Beard, Lauren Walker, Lynn Gibson, Cindy Boling, Fraz Ahktar and Trischelle Strong.
Lynn Gibson nominated Cindy Boling for chairperson, seconded by Amber Beard. Passed unanimously.
Amber Beard was nominated and elected unanimously as vice chairperson.
Each board member received a folder with important information, which assistant director Chris McAllister touched on briefly.
Some of the primary functions of the division include responding to service calls concerning stray animals, animal cruelty and neglect complaints. They conduct bite investigations and wildlife management (egrets).
Boling mentioned of all the cities in Texas, Fort Worth is the only one with two animal shelters. The southside area, Chuck Silcox shelter and the Henry Shelter located on the north side. The shelters provide care of animals brought in through field activity, citizen surrender or drop-off.
McAllister continued, many outbound services are in place, such as foster programs, rescue and transfer, off-site and retail adoption and volunteer engagement.
McAllister proudly announced future plans this spring for a spay/neuter travel trailer going to zip codes with the most needs to offer this service on-site. He wants to contact local veterinarians to ask if they would be interested in volunteering one Saturday.
Boling made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Rachel Cope.
Meeting adjourned at 6 p.m.
Next meeting is 5 p.m. April 22 at Hazel Harvey Peace Center for Neighborhoods, 818 Missouri Ave., Fort Worth.
