HOUSTON – A former Houston Police Department sketch artist, recognized by Guinness World Records as the most successful in her field, has volunteered her expertise to help identify a masked individual captured in the Nancy Guthrie video.
Lois Gibson, who retired from HPD in 2021 after four decades of service, has stepped forward to analyze the doorbell camera footage that has become central to the investigation.
“There were 5,089 cases that I worked. 5,089!” Gibson said, reflecting on her extensive career.
Expert analysis of surveillance footage
Gibson, who has achieved remarkable success in facial reconstruction from minimal evidence, including skeletal remains, is now focusing her skills on one of the region’s most prominent recent cases. After examining the doorbell video footage, she estimates the person of interest to be between their mid-30s and early 40s.
“The eyes, I got the eye shape. I know the eyelids are going to be like that,” Gibson explained while working on her sketch, demonstrating her methodical approach to facial reconstruction.

Despite no official commission from law enforcement agencies, Gibson felt compelled to contribute to the case. Her approach combines four decades of professional experience with an intuitive understanding of facial features.
Gibson’s confidence in her work centers on the visible facial features in the footage, particularly noting “straight up the middle” as her area of greatest certainty. She also observed that the subject “doesn’t have a big nose.”
Legacy of success
Throughout her career, Gibson has demonstrated an exceptional ability to create accurate facial reconstructions that have led to successful identifications. Her work has earned her recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful sketch artist.
When asked if she believed the case would remain unsolved indefinitely, Gibson responded, “That’s why I did this. I didn’t want it to.”
The veteran sketch artist views this voluntary contribution as an extension of her life’s purpose, continuing her commitment to law enforcement and public service even in retirement.
