The Austin Police Department announced the arrest of a man caught on camera physically attacking his dog last weekend. He is now charged with animal cruelty.

Police said John Kaschak was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 12, and charged with cruelty to animals. The third-degree felony could result in 2-10 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.

“The arrest was the result of a thorough and ongoing investigation that included evidence provided by concerned community members, whose information was instrumental in establishing probable cause,” the press release states.

APD responded to an animal urgent call at the SEVEN Apartments on West 7th Street on Sunday, Feb. 8. A video posted to Reddit by a concerned neighbor showed Kaschak attacking the dog with patio furniture, a piece of cloth, and a belt.

The next day, police announced the dog, named Boone, had been seized by its Animal Cruelty Unit and was recovering from the ordeal with Animal Services staff.

The Animal Cruelty Unit then conducted an investigation that included reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assessing Boone’s welfare. “Based on the totality of the evidence collective, investigators were able to move forward with an arrest,” the statement reads.

Boone is still receiving care from Animal Services staff. He is not currently available for adoption or foster placement as the case is ongoing.

However, community members can still help out by fostering other shelter dogs, which can create space for animals placed into protective care while APD investigates their owners’ criminal cases.

“Public involvement, combined with a diligent investigative process, played a vital role in ensuring accountability in this case,” the statement concludes.
