This spring, Arlington Water Utilities is teaming up with Tarrant Regional Water District and the Arlington Public Library to host a variety of educational events for everyone to participate in. These events were designed to inform attendees on how to protect your gardens and lawns from this upcoming Texas summer heat. Even if you’re a seasoned gardener or a complete beginner, these events will help you make the most out of your landscape.
Spring in the Garden
11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Saturday, March 21, at the Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden, 5500 Lake Arlington Dr.
Looking for a fun free activity to celebrate the start of spring? Consider our Spring in the Garden event where we’ll be teaching you all about drought-tolerant Texas native plants and pollinators.
Activities will include:
Tours of the Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden site, which feature five large demonstration garden beds with native plants as well as a gathering area for gardening classes, field trips, and other community events.
A “pick it and pot it” table with two free native Texas landscaping plants for each event attendee, while supplies last.
An “Ask the Master Gardener” table where members of the Tarrant County Master Gardeners Association will provide planting tips for spring
A table where Arlington Bee City USA committee members will be giving advice about supporting the pollinator population.
Nature-based educational activities for kids.
A visit from the Arlington Water Utilities leak detection K-9 – Splash!

DIY Sprinkler Repair
2-3 p.m., Saturday, March 21, at the Arlington Public Library Northeast Branch, 1905 Brown Blvd.
When’s the last time you’ve checked your sprinkler system? There might be simple issues that can be easily fixed! In this workshop, a licensed irrigator will teach you the basics of your sprinkler system and how to fix common issues with minimal time and effort.

All the parts of a typical home sprinkler system
How to see if your system has uneven coverage
How to adjust heads and maintain your system
How to check your system for leaks
How to make easy DIY repairs

Soil and Site Prep at the Lake Arlington Garden
6 – 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 7, at the Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden, 5500 Lake Arlington Dr.
Did you know the key to a beautiful garden is the soil beneath the surface? Proper soil and site preparation is the foundation for an amazing garden. It ensures the right balance of nutrients, sunlight, and drainage goes to your plants.
In this free class, you’ll learn about:
North Texas soil types
Soil testing

Storytime in the Garden
10 – 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 18, at the Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden, 5500 Lake Arlington Dr.
Looking for a special outdoor activity for your family to celebrate spring? Join us for a 30- minute garden-themed story time followed by a tour of our garden. During the tour, we’ll be teaching about drought resistant Texas native plants, and afterwards you’ll receive a free plant to take home.

DIY Wicking Buckets
2 – 3 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Arlington Public Library Northeast Branch, 1905 Brown Blvd.
Wicking buckets are a great option for your garden, and it’s something you could easily make at home. A wicking bucket is a self-watering bucket that could be a neat addition to your garden. Come to our free workshop to learn the many advantages of gardening with a wicking bucket and how to make one yourself.

DIY Rainwater Harvesting

Attend this outdoor workshop to create your own rain barrel to take home for only $25! Rainwater harvesting is a great way to save the water from our spring showers to use for your landscaping this Texas summer. In this workshop you’ll learn the ins and outs of rainwater harvesting and how to create your own rain barrel so you can start preparing for the summer.
We will cover:

Where to put your rain barrel to capture the most water
How to install a barrel
