The Department of Defense was able to address the situation to reopen the airspace.
The airspace around the El Paso International Airport in Texas was temporarily closed earlier this week after Mexican cartel drones breached its airspace.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the Department of Defense “acted swiftly to address a cartel drone incursion. The threat has been neutralized, and there is no danger to commercial travel in the region.” The number of unmanned drones involved was not disclosed.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) originally had announced that it was going to ground all commercial, cargo, and general aviation flights in and out of the El Paso airport for ten days due to “special security reasons.” However, they lifted that decision hours after announcing it.
Some airline officials indicated that the closure may have been conducted out of an abundance of caution since the FAA could not predict where the drones would fly.
