WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Baylor Law School opened its doors to all of Central Texas today for the People’s Law School, where lawyers and law students host legal seminars for the public, completely free of charge.
For 21 years running, Baylor Law School has been home to the People’s Law School program. The school offers 18 classes covering a wide range of legal topics.
“We have how to get into law school, landlord/tenant law, family law, including divorces and custody, we have negotiation, mediation, prosecuting criminals, title insurance, all kinds of wonderful topics,” said Josh Borderud, Baylor Law School’s Director of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs and Clinical Lecturer.
The program aims to provide something for everyone who attends, with hopes that participants leave with whatever knowledge or guidance they’re looking for.
“So, we try to get a good, broad, cross-section of the law so there will be topics of interest for all types of attendees. We try to always have a little something about family law, or criminal law, something about real estate, something about wills and trusts, so that people can come and get exposure to a variety of topics, and hopefully the one that they’re most interested in,” Borderud said.
Borderud said the People’s Law School serves as a reminder that being a lawyer should come with a commitment to service.
“The legal profession is a service profession. The People’s Law School, like our clinics, like our pro-bono program, is a way that we as attorneys give back to the community. We instill that in our law students, and we want them to know that serving the community, sometimes even on a Saturday morning, is a life long commitment, and it’s an obligation as lawyers,” Borderud said.
