EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS 4) — College softball season is officially here and on President’s Day Weekend both UTEP and New Mexico State hosted softball tournaments, featuring some of top teams from around the country.
UTEP is hosting the Dr. Diana Natalicio Memorial Tournament at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex. On Friday, the Miners faced off against Minnesota and Idaho State in a double header. The Miners would drop both ball games, falling 8-6 to Minnesota in their opener. Later in the afternoon, UTEP saw an early lead vanish as Idaho State came back to win 5-3.
Over in Las Cruces in the Troy Cox Classic, NMSU kicked off the day against #3 Oklahoma. The Sooners, who are only two years removed from a national title, proved to be too much for the Aggies taking them down 18-6. However, NMSU would bounce back in their second game of the day getting the best of Montana 8-3.
Both tournaments will roll on through Sunday.
