HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team capped off its weekend as hosts at the Houston Invitational with a 7-0 shutout victory over Incarnate Word at the Cougar Softball Stadium on Sunday.
 
The Cougars (8-1) finish their second weekend of action with a 4-1 record, totaling 37 runs in five games while winning eight of nine at home to close out a nine-game homestand to start the season.

Game Highlights


Freshman RyLee Gardner opened the scoring for the Cougars with a sac fly on bases loaded to bring sophomore Ariel Redmond home in the bottom of the first.
Sophomore Isabel Cintron continued her hot string at the plate, delivering a two-run single to extend Houston’s lead to 3-0 after the first inning.
Redmond tallied her fifth homer of the season, sending a two-run shot past the fence to stretch the Cougar lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning.
Junior Makenna Mitchell and sophomore Maddie Hartley both produced solo shots in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to cap off Houston’s scoring on the day at 7-0.
Sophomore Nevaeh Brown was lights out in the circle, spinning seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts for her third scoreless appearance this season.

 
Key Innings
1st | Starting the bottom of the first with three-consecutive walks, Gardner stepped up and produced a sac fly deep right field to bring Redmond home for a 1-0 lead. Five pitches later, Cintron knocked a single to left center, bringing two more runs home for a 3-0 lead after one.
 
4th | Following two outs to open the bottom of the fourth, junior Jordee Wilkins produced a base hit single followed by a stolen base to stand at second base. Redmond came to the plate and found her pitch as she connected for her fifth homer of the season, scoring two on the play to extend Houston’s lead to 5-0.
 
UP NEXT
The Cougars will hit the road for the first time this season as they compete in the Cajun AC Louisiana Clash hosted by McNeese. Houston will open the first day of play with a doubleheader against Missouri (1 p.m.) and McNeese (3:30 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 20 at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond.
