AUSTIN (KXAN) — The top-ranked Texas softball season completed the Bevo Classic with a pair of wins over Ohio State and Northern Illinois on Sunday at McCombs Field.

The Longhorns topped the Huskies 9-1 and beat the Buckeyes 7-4, moving to 9-1 on the season.

Longhorn Legend: Reese Atwood’s record-setting blast helps Texas win home opener

Cam Salmon earned the win in the circle against Ohio State, taking over in relief of Hannah Wells in the second inning. Salmon allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Wells, a freshman, hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning.

Against the Huskies, Teagan Kavan went the distance, scattering five hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Katie Stewart hit a 2-run home run off of her older sister, Danielle Stewart, in the first inning to fuel a 3-run frame.

A pair of freshmen hit their first collegiate homers for the Longhorns. Shortstop Jaycie Nichols smacked a solo blast in the fifth, and third baseman Mataia Lawson went deep over the right-center wall for a solo homer in the sixth.

Texas heads to the West Coast for the DeMarini Invitational beginning Friday in Palo Alto, California. They’ll face No. 15 Arizona twice, Friday and Sunday, and No. 12 Stanford on Friday. Saturday’s doubleheader is against Santa Clara and Boise State.
