Art lovers rejoice because after several months behind closed doors, the El Paso Museum of Art has officially reopened and it’s coming back stronger than ever.

The museum temporarily closed for a $3.5 million infrastructure upgrade focused on modernizing critical behind-the-scenes systems. Improvements included enhanced environmental controls to better preserve artwork and upgraded security systems to meet the highest museum industry standards.

“Thanks to this critical infrastructure investment, the El Paso Museum of Art maintains its standing among a small percentage of museums in the United States to adhere to the highest industry standards,” said Ben Fyffe, City of El Paso Quality of Life managing director.

El Paso Museum of Art Presents: Frida Kahlo-Sus Fotos

While the doors were closed, the museum’s mission never paused. Staff hosted nearly 50 off-site workshops and community arts programs, continuing to connect with El Pasoans across the city.

This past Valentine’s weekend the museum reopened and visitors were able to experience a major highlight: the first-ever El Paso presentation of Frida Kahlo–Sus Fotos.

The internationally acclaimed exhibition features 241 photographs from Frida Kahlo’s personal archive, offering an intimate look at her life through themes such as her origins, her relationship with Diego Rivera, politics, resilience, and love.

Many of the photographs were discovered decades after Kahlo’s death inside her home, now the renowned Museo Frida Kahlo, also known as Casa Azul. The exhibition has attracted more than one million visitors worldwide.

The exhibit is located on the 2nd floor gallery and will be on display until May 17th so plenty of time for locals to enjoy the first-ever presentation of Frida Kahlo–Sus Fotos.
