Governor Abbott celebrates record-breaking school choice demand

  • February 16, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – More than 100,000 Texas families have submitted applications to the Texas Education Freedom Account program in less than two weeks, marking the largest launch of a new school choice program in the nation’s history.

Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the record-breaking demand, saying the response proves families want school choice options. The TEFA program allows eligible students to direct funding toward preapproved educational providers.

“The TEFA program receiving more than 100,000 applications in less than two weeks proves that families overwhelmingly want school choice,” Abbott said. “Through this program, families will receive funds to send their children to a school that is the best fit for them.”

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts administers the program under Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock. Abbott announced on February 4, 2026, that Texas families could begin applying for the program.

Senate Bill 2 created the program, providing $1 billion in funding for families seeking academic choices for their children. Abbott signed the legislation into law.

Accepted families can use the funds to cover tuition expenses, transportation costs and other educational expenses. The money allows families to enroll their children in schools of their choice.

The TEFA program continues accepting online applications through March 17, 2026. All Texas children are eligible if they live in Texas and are United States citizens.

The program does not operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Families can apply at any time during the application window without affecting their child’s chances of receiving funding.

Abbott said the program gives parents greater flexibility in choosing education for their children and helps with academic success regardless of location or income.
