The Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce has named District C Council Member Abbie Kamin 2025 Local Legislator of the Year, recognizing her leadership in advancing policies that support women, families, and neighborhoods across Houston.
The award honors Council Member Kamin’s commitment and advocacy on issues that disproportionately impact women and their families, including women’s health, domestic violence prevention, tackling gun-violence, environmental health, and more.

In 2025, Kamin led several new landmark initiatives, including the launch of SAFEWatch Houston, the nation’s most comprehensive firearm injury dashboard integrating public safety and healthcare data, and funds a city-wide program to distribute free gun locks and gun safes for residents to prevent firearms from falling into the hands of children and stem the tide of unintentional shootings and the gun violence epidemic.
Additionally, Council Member Kamin was the only elected official—from the federal level to the county and city—to dedicate public funds to Planned Parenthood, allocating $25,000 in district service funds to support Texas Gulf Coast Planned Parenthood’s critical healthcare services.
“Across the country, we are seeing protections rolled back—whether it’s access to reproductive healthcare, or basic safety nets for families,” said Kamin. “Local government is the last line of defense to directly improve people’s lives. I remain committed to fighting for policies that protect women’s health, strengthen families, and build safer, more equitable communities across Houston.”
Council Member Kamin previously established the Houston Women’s Commission and championed the city’s first paid prenatal wellness and paid parental leave policy for all city employees. She has been a stalwart advocate for domestic violence survivors and the organizations that support them, work that earned her AVDA’s Ambassador of Advocacy Award in 2025.
