Lawmakers broadened the Texas Compassionate Use Program, expanding treatment options

For years, medical marijuana access in Texas came with a built-in waiting game. Patients could get prescriptions, but actually receiving their medicine often meant placing an order and hoping to catch the delivery window.

That’s now changing.

Thanks to a major expansion of the state’s medical marijuana program, North Texas patients can finally walk into Goodblend in Plano and leave with their prescriptions the same day — a shift that marks one of the most significant access upgrades since Texas first legalized limited medical cannabis use.

What Changed Under The New Law

The update comes after lawmakers broadened the Texas Compassionate Use Program through House Bill 46, dramatically expanding both eligibility and treatment options.

Patients can now receive one-year prescriptions with up to four 90-day refills, all tracked through a statewide registry managed by the Texas Medical Board. The law also widens the list of qualifying conditions to include cancer, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease, degenerative disc disease, glaucoma and those receiving hospice or palliative care. PTSD and certain neurological conditions also remain covered.

The legislation also allows more product formats, including patches, lotions, suppositories and inhalation devices such as vaporizers and nebulizers — offering faster and more flexible relief options.

“At Goodblend Medical Marijuana, we believe every Texan deserves safe and compassionate access to the medicine they need, and this legislation brings us closer to realizing that goal,” the company said in a statement.

Same-Day Pickup Comes To North Texas

According to reporting by The Dallas Morning News, for Goodblend’s Plano location along State Highway 121, the most immediate change is operational.

Previously, the dispensary could not store products onsite overnight. Orders were delivered each morning from the company’s Austin distribution center, and anything unclaimed had to be sent back at the end of the day.

Now, the company can keep inventory at the store, allowing patients to fill prescriptions and pick them up immediately. The Plano shop is among the first in North Texas to offer this convenience.

A Growing Footprint In Texas

Goodblend is one of only three companies licensed to sell medical marijuana in Texas, alongside Texas Original and Fluent.

The company received its license in 2017, began home deliveries in 2019, and opened its first retail storefront in Austin in 2023 before expanding into North Texas later that year.

Today, its offerings include edibles, THC-infused beverages, tinctures, and topical products, with plans to introduce an inhaler pending regulatory approval.

A Turning Point For Patients

The changes represent more than just convenience. For many Texans managing chronic or serious conditions, faster access can mean more consistent treatment and fewer logistical hurdles.

As the program continues to evolve, state officials have signaled the list of qualifying conditions could expand further, suggesting that Texas’ limited medical marijuana system may still be in the early stages of growth.
