LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It’s going to be very windy Tuesday, bringing a high wildfire risk to the South Plains.

First, today it’s been mild again today, with the temperature in the 70s. It’s only going to drop to the upper 40s to low 50s in the morning.

An approaching upper-level storm system will drive the strong wind. This is pretty common for us in the spring. During the morning the wind will be out of the SW about 15-20mph.

The Storm Prediction Center fire weather outlook shows elevated to critical fire weather conditions across West Texas. The worst of conditions will be over NE Colorado into Nebraska, shown in pink.

That said, all across our area, the wildfire risk will be high. Please help the fire departments and your neighbors, do not burn anything outdoors. And be careful with anything that could produce a spark.

Friday’s rain should help limit the fire threat some. That said, the dry, warm wind will dry things out through the day.

Even if the rain limits fire spread Tuesday, we have more windy days upcoming. Wednesday the wind will be up around 20-30mph with higher gusts.

More breezy to windy weather is expected Thursday and Friday.

It’ll drop back closer to what’s typical by the weekend. Longer-range guidance is pointing to warmer weather again next week.
